THE SAINTS – ST. JOHN OF GOD whose feastday is celebrated on 8th March.  He was the founder of the Brothers Hospitallers and was born in Portugal.  He fought For Spain against the French and the Turks.  In the army he gave up practice of religion.  He left the army and worked as a shepherd.  At the age of 40 he was converted to a life of dedication to the service of God.  In Gibraltar he became a pedlar of religious books and pictures and later opened a shop in Granada.  He suffered a period of apparent madness but was calmed down by St John of Avila who persuaded him to devote his energies to the poor and sick.  He died before the altar of his hospital chapel aged 55.  After his death rules were drawn up by his followers who took vows and became a Religious Order.

ST. ANGELA’S RESIDENTIAL HOME, CLIFTON.  The Sisters of the Temple have run homes in Clifton Diocese since l867 and in 1920 they moved to Litfield Place in Clifton where the Congregation has cared lovingly and unstintingly for sick priests of the diocese and elderly people.  In recent years they have been assisted by many devoted lay people and helpers.  On 1st April 2010 the Sisters will be handing over the running of the home to The Association of St. John of God Services.  The Association runs a number of such homes in the country.  The Diocese will greatly miss the Sisters and their care of priests especially, as will many of our parishioners who know St. Angela’s.  Details of a fitting farewell will be announced shortly.

FINALLY:         Never flag in zeal;

                        be aglow with the spirit; serve the Lord.    (Romans)
