ORDINATION TO THE PERMANENT DIACONATE:  On Saturday Bishop Declan ordained Terry Aspell, Denis Deasey and Rob Easton to the Permanent Diaconate.  We offer them our congratulations, prayers and support as they commence their service to  Clifton Diocese as Deacons.  May it bring them great satisfaction.

CONGRATULATIONS AND WELCOME to Oliver Rogers and Antonina Korczak who were baptised here at the Cathedral last weekend.

WELCOME ALSO  to all our  visitors to the Cathedral at this holiday time of year.  We hope you enjoy staying in the area and perhaps visiting family and friends.  As school holidays for many begin, we wish all our parishioners and especially our children a very enjoyable summer.

STELLA GOMEZ RIP:  The mother of Stephen, died suddenly in London on Friday 16th July.  Stephen was a parishioner of the Cathedral for over 20 years and ran the Confirmation programme for over a decade.  Although he has now moved to Plymouth, he still comes to Mass here when visiting Bristol, and is still engaged in parish life running the Cathedral’s website.  Some of you had met Stella and Stephen asks if you could keep his mother in your prayers.  May she rest in peace.

PAPAL VISIT 2010 – A Personal Message from Clifton Cathedral Representative – Gerard Owen.

I am 22 years old and have just graduated from Exeter University with a BA in History and German.  It is a great honour for me to represent our parish of Clifton Cathedral at the visit of Pope Benedict XVI this September as this is a momentous event in the history of the Catholic Church in the United Kingdom.  I approach the procession from Westminster Cathedral to Hyde Park on 18th September with feelings of great excitement and anticipation.  However as Parish Representative and one of a team of voluntary Communications Officers for the Papal Visit, it is my job to report on it through media and share with you all as my fellow parishioners and brothers and sisters in Christ.

So please keep following the Diocesan website, www.cliftondiocese.com for my stories on what is happening.  You can also find me on Twitter at, http://twitter.com/gerardowen

Thank you and God Bless.

FAIRTRADE STALL:  The usual food and beverages; delicious cookies, healthy muesli, Divine chocolate and relaxing coffee will be on sale, after all Masses on Sunday 1st August.  Look out for the special offers!  There will also be a selection of Traidcraft Greeting Cards on sale after the Saturday and Sunday evening Masses.

The next Fairtrade sale will be on Sunday 5th September.

BISHOPSTON TRADING COMPANY will be opening a new fair trade clothing shop in Clifton Village.  The shop is opening on Friday 23 July at 14 Clifton Down Road for 4 weeks only and will bring fair trade products to the village.  See notice in narthex for further details.

CATHOLIC? If not why not?  Is this something you have thought about and would like to explore more.  The Journey in Faith (RCIA) begins again on September 23rd.  We meet on Thursday evenings at 7.30 in the James Room.

We look at the principles of Catholic teaching and belief in an informative and affirming setting with a talk and discussion.  You would be very welcome to join us.  For further details please contact Canon Alan Finley – alan.finley@cliftondiocese.com or Tina Quinn – Tinaquinn123@aol.com

SECOND COLLECTION TODAY is for DAY FOR LIFE 2010 which aims to present the Church’s teaching on death; it will highlight the importance of the sacrament of the sick, of praying for the dead and of accompanying the dying person as they journey towards God.  It will also point towards the consoling presence and support of the community of faith and all of those who ‘have gone before us marked with the sign of faith’.

Proceeds of the collection will go to The Anscombe Bioethics Centre (formerly the Linacre Centre for Healthcare Ethics) and other life-related activities supported by the Church.  Gift Aid envelopes available in the narthex.

PAPAL VISIT

Passes for the Papal Visit are now ready for distribution.  The term PILGRIM will be used for those participating in the Papal Visit events.  65 passes have been allocated to the Cathedral parish for the Beatification Mass at Cofton Park, Birmingham on Sunday 19 September and 84 passes for the Hyde Park Prayer Vigil on Saturday 18 September.  Our allocation of passes has been worked out for us nationally according to parish statistics.

BEATIFICATION MASS – 19 September – 9.30am.

Coaches will be arranged nationally by the Papal Visit organisers.  You will not have to arrange your own transport to the Cofton Park Mass.  Because travelling by coach we will need to travel in groups of 49.  33 Pilgrim Passes have been allocated to St. Bonaventure’s, and so it is suggested that the Cathedral has one group of 49 and one group made up of 33 from St. Bon’s and 16 from the Cathedral.

All Pilgrims will be asked to make a contribution to the Pilgrim journey.  This will include, of course, return coach transport as well as a Pilgrim Pack.  The contribution for this will be £30 per Pilgrim.

HYDE PARK PRAYER VIGIL – 18 September – Ending at 9pm

The parish has been allocated 84 Pilgrim passes.   You are asked to make your own travel arrangements to Hyde Park but enter Hyde Park in groups.  Each group must have a named Pilgrim Leader.  The groups can be made up of varying sizes but each group must have its own Pilgrim Leader.  The contribution for this event will be £10.  Each Pilgrim will receive a Pilgrim Pack as well as a London Travelcard.  It is anticipated that Hyde Park will open in the late morning, the prayer vigil will begin in the early evening and will end at 9pm.

If enough pilgrims come forward, the parish will be organising a coach to Hyde Park.

If you wish to attend one of these events, would you please  ring Cathedral House Monday – Friday between 9am and 1pm giving your name and contact number.  We would appreciate your immediate response in this matter otherwise excess tickets will be given to other Parishes who have not been so fortunate to receive such a large number of Passes.
