FEAST OF THE TRANSFIGURATION;  Jesus in his glory.  Jesus is seen by Peter, James and John in his glory as Christ, messiah, King of the universe.  It was wonderful for them to be there and witness the power of their leader even though they were overcome by fear at what they saw.  God reveals Christ to us too and we look forward in joy and hope to sharing fully in his glory.  We have no need to fear.  Christ is God’s Son and our brother.

WELCOME!  To all our visitors this holiday season.  We hope you enjoy worshipping with us at the Cathedral and also your stay in the Bristol area.  May you be refreshed.  During the 9.30am and 11am Sunday Masses in August a member of the Pastoral Council will welcome everyone before Mass begins, name the Sunday, and announce the celebrant.

CONGRATULATIONS AND WELCOME to Charles McDonald and Polly Naughton who were baptised here at the Cathedral last weekend.

FAIRTRADE STALL:  The usual food and beverages; delicious cookies, healthy muesli, Divine chocolate and relaxing coffee will be on sale, after all Masses TODAY 1st August.  Look out for the special offers!  There will also be a selection of Traidcraft Greeting Cards on sale after the Saturday and Sunday evening Masses.

The next Fairtrade sale will be on Sunday 5th September.

CATHOLIC? If not why not?  Is this something you have thought about and would like to explore more.  The Journey in Faith (RCIA) begins again on September 23rd.  We meet on Thursday evenings at 7.30 in the James Room.

We look at the principles of Catholic teaching and belief in an informative and affirming setting with a talk and discussion.  You would be very welcome to join us.  For further details please contact Canon Alan Finley – alan.finley@cliftondiocese.com or Tina Quinn – Tinaquinn123@aol.com

SUPPORTING EX-PRISONERS.  A  leaflet displayed in the narthex gives details of a scheme to support prisoners being released from HMP Bristol.  If interested there is a meeting on Monday 23rd August from 7 – 9.30pm at the CCISR offices in Pennywell Road (next door to the Diocesan Offices at Alexander House).  More details from alan.bradley@prisonadvice.org.uk or tel 01179 244866 or 07791 548843.

KATE CULLEN has worked in the music department of the Cathedral for 22 years, often behind the scenes producing hymn, Mass and Service sheets for our week-end Masses and also for special occasions of which we have many!  She often sings the psalm and acts as cantor and will continue to be a member of the 11am Sunday choir.  She is retiring from the department this week-end and we hope she enjoys more spare time and thank her for the great contribution she has made, not least with dealing sensitively with the bereaved.  Have a happy retirement and we shall pray for you.

HOSPITAL ADMISSIONS:  If you or a member of your family has been admitted to hospital, it is necessary on admission you specifically ask for a visit from the Roman Catholic Chaplain, as due to the Data Protection Act concerning the distribution of patients personal details on admission to hospital, this information is not now passed to the Chaplain.

PAPAL VISIT

Passes for the Papal Visit are now ready for distribution.  The term PILGRIM will be used for those participating in the Papal Visit events.  65 passes have been allocated to the Cathedral parish for the Beatification Mass at Cofton Park, Birmingham on Sunday 19 September and 84 passes for the Hyde Park Prayer Vigil on Saturday 18 September.  Our allocation of passes has been worked out for us nationally according to parish statistics.

BEATIFICATION MASS – 19 September – 9.30am.

Coaches will be arranged nationally by the Papal Visit organisers.  You will not have to arrange your own transport to the Cofton Park Mass.  Because travelling by coach we will need to travel in groups of 49.  33 Pilgrim Passes have been allocated to St. Bonaventure’s, and so it is suggested that the Cathedral has one group of 49 and one group made up of 33 from St. Bon’s and 16 from the Cathedral.

All Pilgrims will be asked to make a contribution to the Pilgrim journey.  This will include, of course, return coach transport as well as a Pilgrim Pack.  The contribution for this will be £30 per Pilgrim.

HYDE PARK PRAYER VIGIL – 18 September.

The parish has been allocated 84 Pilgrim passes.   A coach has now been organised to depart from the Cathedral.  For those who intend to make their own way, you will be required to meet up with the Pilgrim Leader and coach party prior to entering Hyde Park.  The contribution for this event will be £10, and there will be an additional cost for those travelling by coach.  Hyde Park will be open from 2pm onwards.

If you wish to attend one of these events, (last day for  application is Monday 2nd August) would you please  ring Cathedral House by Monday (2nd) between 9am and 1pm giving your name and contact number.

You will be contacted with details within the next 7/10 days if a place is available.

A DAY WITH MARY:  Saturday 28 August 2010 at Downside Abbey, Stratton-on-the-Fosse, Somerset 10.00am – 4pm. For further details see poster in narthex.

TNT Clifton are a group of young Roman Catholics, in the twenties to thirties(ish!) age range, from the diocese of Clifton, based at Clifton Cathedral, Bristol.  We meet socially for drinks at Channings very near Clifton Cathedral after the 6pm Mass on Sundays and for other events, eg walks, the cinema etc.  You can join us by emailing TNTClifton@gmail.com or just meet us as we gather at the back of the Cathedral on Sundays after Mass to walk over to Channings – you won’t miss us!
