The newly appointed Ninth Bishop of Clifton, Bishop Declan Lang, has taken for his motto "Evangeli Nutiandii" . What does this mean and why did he select it?

The meaning might be variously translated, but I suggest "Proclaim the Gospel" is best.

The other day I met Bishop Declan in the Cathedral and I asked him, why he had chosen it. He said, "It is the opening words from an Apostolic Exhortation of Paul Vl made on 8 December 1975, it is simply, one of the most important statements for the Church in this modern age."

If you read this alongside my earlier answer about the previous bishop's motto "in defensione evangelii' you will get the meaning altogether!

I also did a bit of research and if your enquirer wants to read the Apostolic Exhortation "Evangelisation in the Modern World" this is available on the internet at
http://www.ewtn.com/library/PAPALDOC/P6EVAN.HTM

The Apostolic Exhoration has the Synod of Bishops in 1974 as a backcloth. Having read the document again, I can recommend it to the enquirer.

Get past the high sounding 'Vaticanese' language, and realise that simply put this is an exhortation to announce the Good News, to proclaim the gospel in the modern world, and not to lose heart when facing rejection, indifference or persecution for the faith. Certainly this is true for the millennium, and a fitting motto for our new Bishop Declan.

Your enquirer may also like to notice that Bishop Declan has a strong pastoral record of achievement in the areas of pastoral formation and the education of young people and adults.

In the end it is the responsibility of every Christian to preach the gospel by word and deed  -to Proclaim the Gospel.
