Second Sunday of Advent

Year B

Theme: Be Prepared!

The stark figure of the last of the prophets: John the Baptist, challenges us to examine ourselves.

We need to prepare for the new heaven and new earth that is to come.

First Reading:

Prophet Isaiah [40:1-5, 9-11]

This reading refers to the return from the Babylonian exile. The people travel home to Jerusalem, with their God with them. So the cry goes out to prepare the royal road, to make a way for the triumphant return of the King and Lord. The contrast is between, forced labour and slavery in a foreign land, and the consolation and joy of freedom , in their own homeland.

Second Reading:

Apostle Peter second Letter  [ 3: 8-14]

The reading gives us the images of what Peter thought might happen at the end of time, rather than what will happen. Although the Day will come unexpectedly, if we are doing our best to life as we should, we can wait in confidence for the promised new heaven and new earth.

Gospel Reading:

Gospel according to Mark [1: 1-9]

The Baptist, is seen as the Herald of the return. Waiting in prayer and fasting in the desert  to be among the first to welcome the return of the Lord. It is John’s privilege to be the last of the prophets and the one chosen to announce the coming of the long expected Messiah King. We would do well to heed John’s message.
