Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
† Sunday 29th October 2000

Theme: Saved, through faith.

A reading from the Prophet Jeremiah 31 : 7 - 9
Here we have a joyful proclamation of the end of suffering for Israel, and the return to God’s fatherly care, with the new covenant. Too often we see images on our television screens, of refugees fleeing from flood, war or drought,in contrast here the image of this prophecy is of the great homeward return, in the time of deliverance, and of the caring hand of God.“See,” the Lord says, “I will bring them back...gather them from the far ends of the earth; all of them: the blind and the lame, women with child...a great company returning here.”

A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews 5 : 1 - 6
Continuing with the explanation of the Priesthood of Jesus, and comparing it with the Temple priesthood of the Jews, the author of this letter reminds us, “No one takes this honour upon himself, but each one is called by God.” The Christian priest, who himself, “lives in the limitations of weakness,” is appointed to act for people in their relations with God. It is a priesthood of humble service, and like that of Melchizedek, it is for ever.

The Gospel according to Mark 10 : 46 - 52
As so often, Mark sets the events described as part of a journey with Jesus. Note that after the healing of the blind man Bartimaeus, he too joins Jesus, and follows him along the road. Is the evangelist telling us something about faith, about what might happen when we meet the Lord? The narrative, typical of Mark, is full of significant detail. For Bartimaeus, is the son of Timaeus, known to the community, and he throws off his cloak, when he is called, “Master, let me see again!” he says. Details that suggest the recollections of someone who was present on the day.
Reflecting on this narrative, we might see it as a simple healing event, a miracle. We might see a deeper meaning, in that the Lord calls us, to have courage, to have faith, and then we too, shall see and understand, and follow along the way of Jesus For the evangelist Mark, that journey leads to Jerusalem, the death of Jesus and then the Resurrection.
